Teen girl, man held after alleged abduction of baby

A 14-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man were in police custody facing possible kidnapping charges after the pair took off in her uncle's car with a baby in the backseat Wednesday afternoon in the city's Kensington section, police said.

Around 2:30 p.m., the 2005 Nissan Maxima was stolen from the 1800 block of East Clementine Street with a 1-year-old boy inside, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The Nissan was equipped with the OnStar location service, so police were able to track the car to City Avenue and then to the Tioga neighborhood, Small said.

Police briefly followed the car and lost it, but then found it abandoned in the 3700 block of Sydenham Street. Police found the pair running through an alley with the infant and then onto the 3700 block of North 16th Street.

The girl and man stopped at a house and handed the baby to a 25-year-old woman who was standing on the porch, Small said.

The woman was "a total stranger," he said.

The pair shed their jackets and the girl took off a sweatshirt before running into the house, but were arrested nonetheless.

The boy was not injured, but was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for an evaluation. He was reunited with his mother at the hospital.

It was unclear if the girl stole the car by herself, or if the man was with her at the beginning, Small said.

Why they went on the ride was not immediately known, he said.
