Fri. Pa. boys' roundup: Abington takes down Coatesville

Jordan Simmons' long-range shooting carried Abington to an upset at Coatesville on Friday night in the quarterfinals of the District 1 Class AAAA basketball tournament.

Simmons nailed four three-pointers in a 24-point performance, sending the Ghosts (19-6) to a 69-66 victory and a berth in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Abington, seeded No. 11 in the 32-team field, also got 20 points from Anthony Durham and 10 by Jiere Morrisey. Third-seeded Coatesville (22-5) was led by Tymeir Miller's 15 points.

Also in Class AAAA, Lower Merion will be Abington's semifinal opponent at Temple after bouncing visiting Souderton, 60-54.

The Aces trailed by a point after three quarters before B.J. Johnson (23 points) and JaQuan Johnson (12) ignited the comeback. Luke Moyer led Souderton with a game-high 26 points.

In the Class AAAA consolations, Council Rock North stayed alive with a 64-59 win over visiting Plymouth Whitemarsh. North watched an 18-point lead disappear, but rallied behind Rip Engel's 24 points, Arron Goodman's 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Aaron Morgan's nine points and four assists.

Penn Wood rallied from a 22-18 halftime deficit and eliminated host Great Valley, 60-50, as Malcolm Richardson scored 25 of his 32 points after intermission.

Pennsbury's Jerrel Burke and Methacton's Brendan Casper shared game scoring honors with 24 points apiece, but Burke was backed by Ryan Charity's 16 points as the host Falcons prevailed, 72-64.

Cheltenham followed Nafis Walker's 17 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists to a 58-50 win at Bensalem.

District 1 Class A. Girard College used balanced scoring from Tyreek Peeples (18), David Ware (16), Nicholas Jones (16), and Devon Clark-Walker (11) to claim a 65-47 quarterfinal win over visiting Delco Christian.

Peeples added 10 assists, Jones had 10 rebounds and Alante Blackwell snagged eight boards.

Church Farm breezed past visiting Christopher Dock, 60-33, behind Howard Sellars' 24 points. Sellars, a junior guard, hit five three-pointers and boosted his career total to 1,010 points, reaching the 1,000-point plateau in the second period.

Anthony Delmidio's 3-2 upset of top-seeded Kolton Veit of Souderton highlighted a wave of surprises in the 120-pound quarterfinals in the District 1 Class AAA North tournament at Quakertown.

Pennsbury's Delmidio (25-6) stunned Veit (28-2) as one of three quarterfinal upsets in the weight class. Third-seeded Tyrelle Robinson of Perkiomen Valley was beaten, 8-3, by Council Rock North's Tim Ambacher, who entered the meet with a 14-21 record, and fourth-seeded Zach Lyall of Upper Moreland suffered a 5-3 loss to Upper Perkiomen's Kyle Fellman.

Class AAA South. At Spring-Ford, three of the top four seeds at 126 pounds were beaten in the quarterfinals.

Marple Newtown's Pat Callaghan edged second-seeded Dan Pommerer of Downingtown West, 8-5; Strath Haven's Tyler Clapp decisioned third-seeded Matt Carney of Upper Darby, 5-4, and Garnet Valley's Fred Alderman tripped fourth-seeded Jim Stong of Spring-Ford, 6-4.

Spring-Ford's Jason Dombrosky (32-8) handed Interboro's Dave Forte (39-1) his first loss of the season, 8-6, at 145 pounds.

The district tournaments continue Saturday morning.
