Neumann-Goretti names Zolk baseball coach.

Five months after his son wrapped up a stellar high school career at the school, Mike Zolk has been tabbed as Neumann-Goretti's new baseball boss.

Five months after his son wrapped up a stellar high school career at the school, Mike Zolk has been tabbed as Neumann-Goretti's new baseball boss.

Zolk, 45, received word of his hiring Saturday afternoon from Neumann-Goretti principal Patriccia Sticco.

"It's going to be a challenge, but I'm really excited about it," the Parkwood resident said.

Last spring, Mike "Zoom" Zolk helped the Saints to a 22-1 record and their second Catholic League championship in three seasons. A second baseman, he is now a freshman at the University of North Carolina.

The elder Zolk, a 1984 graduate of Frankford, is a full-time baseball instructor and director of the Tri-State Arsenal, a Bucks County-based squad that showcases the area's best prospects.

Lou Spadaccini, Neumann-Goretti's coach the last five seasons, was arrested in September on charges of plying a 14-year-old boy with alcohol and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy.

"I wanted to be the guy to take over and lead this team in the right direction," Zolk said. "I don't want the kids to be affected by what allegedly happened. They didn't do anything wrong."
