Wilson, Gerlach going to nationals

Wilson placed fifth in the boys' qualifier for the Foot Locker national championship race to be held Dec. 10 at Balboa Park in San Diego.

His time of 15 minutes, 50 seconds on the 3.1-mile course near Long Island Sound trailed winner Edward Cheserek (course record 15:20) of St. Benedict's Prep (N.J.) by 30 seconds, but was just 5 seconds out of second place.

Brett Kelly of Boyertown finished 15th in 16:22, and Hatboro-Horsham's Conner Quinn placed 25th in 16:39.

In the girls' competition, Gerlach grabbed the final available berth in the national finals by placing 10th in 18:40. She had a 4-second cushion ahead of her closest pursuer.

Homer City's Angel Piccirillo won the race in 18:01, while Strath Haven's Hannah Grossman finished 14th (19:02) and Notre Dame's Maria Seykora was 20th (19:14).

Nike Regionals. Pennsbury's Ann Herman qualified for the girls' national championship race with a fifth-place finish in the Northeast Regional qualifying race at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls, N.Y.

Herman, a senior, clocked 18 minutes, 48 seconds, trailing race winner Elle Purrier, a sophomore from Richford, Vermont, who posted a time of 18:30.

The Nike national race will be held Dec. 3 on the infield of the Portland (Ore.) Meadows horse racetrack.
