US Airways Group Inc. said Tuesday that it canceled 9,100 flights and lost about $8 million to $10 million in operating income because of Hurricane Irene last month.
Flights were canceled from Aug. 27-29, during the busy end-of-summer travel period. Flights were suspended at airports in Philadelphia, Washington, New Jersey, New York, and Boston.
US Airways also said Tuesday, in a regulatory filing, that traffic rose 1.2 percent in August compared with a year ago, and that the money the airline made per passenger rose 9 percent, mostly due to higher ticket prices.
Planes were fuller, with a passenger "load factor" of 87.4 percent in August, compared with planes being 85.2 percent full in August 2010.
