Eleven free tax-preparation sites opened in Philadelphia this week and will be available to qualifying taxpayers through April 18, the deadline for filing 2010 income tax returns.

The sites are run by the Campaign for Working Families., an affiliate of the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition.

The tax service, performed by IRS-certified volunteers, is available to families with annual income of up to $49,000 and individuals earning less than $20,000.

The locations and schedule of day and hours for each are available online at www.phillyfreetaxes.org.

The campaign has offered the free tax service for eight years and is adding an option this year: For taxpayers to use their refunds to buy U.S. Savings Bonds.    -Paul Schweizer
