C&D gets $5M Army battery contract

C&D Technologies Inc., Blue Bell, said it won a three-year, $5 million contract from the U.S. Army to develop advanced batteries that will be used with small-scale solar and wind power generation in remote field operations.

C&D Technologies Inc., Blue Bell, said it won a three-year, $5 million contract from the U.S. Army to develop advanced batteries that will be used with small-scale solar and wind power generation in remote field operations.

The new batteries, which will be developed and manufactured in Blue Bell and Leola, Pa., will be able to withstand frequent rechargings, said C&D's chief executive, Jeffrey Graves. Graves said C&D had been working on these new lead-carbon batteries for three years and expected them to be ready for use in the field soon.

The contract provided $1.2 million immediately, with the remainder anticipated over the life of the contract.    - Harold Brubaker
