Employers in New Jersey added 10,500 jobs in April, the largest monthly increase since January 2008, the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development said.

Most of the gain - 8,100 jobs - was in the private sector, especially professional/business services, manufacturing, financial services and leisure/hospitality.

The rest of April's increase was in government jobs. Even with the added jobs, New Jersey's unemployment rate remained at 9.8 percent because more people began looking for work but hadn't yet found jobs. They were counted as unemployed.       - Paul Schweizer
