Carlson still talking

WHAT'S WORSE: A ludicrous statement or the weak attempt at the retraction of a ludicrous statement? The following was posted yesterday on the Daily News' Eagletarian blog. It reports the feeble attempt at a mea culpa by political analyst Tucker Carlson regarding his recent comments on Eagles quarterback Michael Vick.

Of the many ridiculous things said about Michael Vick this season, none was more ridiculous than political analyst Tucker Carlson's suggestion that Vick should have been executed for his role in a dogfighting ring.

Carlson got plenty of attention for the remark, and of course that led to another shot at it for him to backtrack. You will note, however, that there is no apology anywhere in his latest remarks.

Carlson made the comments when he was serving as a guest host on "Hannity." He returned to the show last night, this time with Sean Hannity as the host.

"This is what happens when you get too emotional," Carlson said, according to the Huffington Post. "I'm a dog lover . . . I love them and I know a lot about what Michael Vick did . . . I overspoke. I'm uncomfortable with the death penalty in any circumstance. Of course I don't think he should be executed, but I do think that what he did is truly appalling."

Refreshing twist . . .

Carlo Ancelotti, manager of defending English Premier League champions Chelsea, told the press yesterday that he is lucky to still have a job after the team has slumped nine points behind leader Manchester United in the EPL standings. Ancelotti added that he hopes Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovich decides his fate at the end of the 2010-11 campaign.

"I am a lucky man," Ancelotti said. "I understand that a lot of coaches are sacked with results like these. When you go to a restaurant, you have to pay the bill when you finish your meal, it's the same here. We have to pay the bill at the end of the season. At the end the club can judge me."
