Andrew Hugh Wallace, 81, math professor & sailor

Andrew Hugh Wallace, who taught mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania and sailed off to Crete when he retired, died Jan. 18 in Chania, Crete.

Andrew Hugh Wallace, who taught mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania and sailed off to Crete when he retired, died Jan. 18 in Chania, Crete.

He was 81.

He was born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, and graduated with honors with a Ph.D. in mathematics from St. Andrews University.

He and his former wife, Angela, and three daughters came to America in 1959. He was professor and chairman of the Mathematics Department of Indiana University before he came to Penn.

On his retirement, Wallace settled in Crete and married his second wife, Dimitra. He was a passionate sailor who spent much of his retirement sailing the islands surrounding Crete.

He also was a talented painter and musician, who could be heard playing the bagpipes in the late afternoon.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Linda Kipp, Susan George and Corinne Summers; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Irene Chilari; and a step-granddaughter.
