The late Police Sgt. Michael Taylor was so dedicated to education that he worked two or more jobs to put his children through school.

The Police Department is honoring Taylor's commitment to education with the Taylor Open Golf Tournament to raise funds for scholarships for the children of police and firefighters, next Monday at Blue Bell Country Club.

"Mike Taylor was a fantastic human being, a good family man, served his county in Vietnam where he was wounded, but he never complained," said Chief Inspector James Tiano.

"He worked two jobs to send his kids to school, and now one is a doctor and the other is a teacher. Mike worked and worked and bled education," he added.

Tiano said the idea of the open was born after Taylor's death in February 2003, and to date, the tournament has raised more than $52,000 in scholarship funds. Taylor's widow, Mary, is also active in the fundraising.

Taylor worked on a service detail that dealt with homelessness.

"Mike received accolades from all over for the work he's done," Tiano said.

Registration and practice time begin at 10:30 a.m. at the club, DeKalb Pike (Route 202) and Morris Road, Blue Bell, Montgomery County. Registration is $150. For more info, contact Tiano at 215-685-3655. *
