Zayn, Perrie's One Direction: To the altar

IN A MOVE that must have caused a publicist to reach for the smelling salts, One Direction's Zayn Malik has become engaged to Perrie Edwards, of the group Little Mix. They're both 20.

Tearful One Direction fans decried the engagement as part of a Zaynist conspiracy.

Rumors started to percolate when Perrie was spotted wearing a diamond ring Tuesday at the London premiere of the One Direction film "This Is Us."

Her mother, Debbie, confirmed yesterday that her daughter and Malik were engaged. She told Real Radio: "It's true. They got engaged on Sunday and it's absolutely lovely."

Columbia Records confirmed in a statement that "Zayn and Perrie are engaged, but any further detail regarding their relationship is private."

Or until we leak it.

Part of the Simon Cowell musical empire, like boy band One Direction, girl band Little Mix formed on the British "X Factor," winning the competition in 2011. One Direction placed third in 2010, proving that winning is overrated.

Authorities say that former teen heartthrob David Cassidy (can you believe he's 63?) was pulled over in upstate New York for failing to dim his headlights and was charged with driving while intoxicated after tests showed his blood-alcohol content at .10, higher than the state's legal limit of .08.

Schodack Police Lt. Joseph Belardo said Cassidy was stopped shortly after midnight yesterday about 10 miles south of Albany.

The charge is a felony because Cassidy has a 2011 conviction for driving under the influence in Florida. He lives in Fort Lauderdale but is staying in upstate New York because it's horse-racing season in Saratoga.

* DMX has been arrested again in South Carolina.

Police say that DMX (a/k/a Earl Simmons) wasn't even driving this time. He was a passenger in a truck that was stopped late Tuesday for an illegal U-turn.

Lt. Jim Holcombe says that officers arrested DMX after realizing that he had an outstanding warrant for driving under suspension. Police also found marijuana, so DMX and the driver were charged with simple possession.

* "Roar," the new Katy Perry single, sold 557,024 downloads in its first week of release, making it the biggest digital-song sales week of 2013 to date, the biggest digital-song sales week of Katy's career and the biggest digital-song debut of Katy's career.

Maybe it will grow on us. So far? Meh.

* Now that he's done performing at Kylie Jenner's Super Ridiculous Sweet 16 bash, Drake is going to take it down a notch to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday.

The rapper joins a hefty list of performers, including Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake (probably with 'NSync), Katy Perry and Kanye West.

Jared Leto, Emeli Sande and A$AP Rocky also will appear.

* Dolly Parton's Dollywood theme park is planning a $300 million expansion, to include a resort.

A new roller coaster, this one aimed at families, is scheduled to open in 2014.

Shouldn't they aim it away from families?

* In movies, the man from GLAAD is still straight.

GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, said in its first report on major-studio releases that such films are reluctant to include LGBT characters in significant roles or franchises. This is particularly true, it says, in comic-book adaptations or action franchises.

In 2012, the year it examined, it says that of 101 releases from the six biggest studios, only 14 included characters identified as lesbian, gay or bisexual. Most were cameos or minor roles, and there were no transgender characters in any films.

Oh, yeah, Adam Sandler's "Jack and Jill" was 2011.

* E! News reports that "Prison Break" star Wentworth Miller has come out as gay.

Guess he should have broken out of prison sooner.

* Kirsten Storms' "General Hospital" character is in labor this week with her daughter.

In real life, 29-year-old Storms is also pregnant with her first child, due in January, and says that it's a baby girl.

Dad is 33-year-old Brandon Barash, who played Johnny Zacchara on the soap but left the show in April.

Storms and Barash also say they secretly got married in June.

According to TMI in People magazine, the couple think they conceived the baby on a trip to Amsterdam, while staying in co-star Tony Geary's guest room.

* Desperate for a bit of wholesome publicity, Justin Bieber reportedly told In Touch magazine: "I can't wait to have a beautiful wife and little kids running around."

Ugh. It's not as bad as the Internet sensation who got a fork stuck in his penis, but Tattle just gagged on a spoon.

As for when Justin will choose to settle down with his "beautiful wife," he said, "those things are in God's hands, not mine."

Ugh squared.

A young man of great spiritual faith, Justin is also a hopeless romantic.

"I'm not going to lie. It's fun to be young, fall in love and be in love," he tells In Touch. "My mom taught me how to treat a woman right, so I enjoy taking a girl out and doing nice things for her. Everyone deserves to feel like they are the most special person in the world."
