On her new CD, "Imagina: Songs of Brasil," singer
Karrin Allyson
fully commits to the Jobimiana with which she'd flirted many times on previous releases. Allyson's pliant, willowy voice wraps sinuously around lyrics in both Portuguese and English. For her gigs here, expect a blend of the Brazilian songbook and the jazz standards that typically fill the vocalist's releases. Cool, flowing takes on the likes of Shorter and Coltrane get at least as much prominence in her book as the ubiquitous Gershwin and Porter.
