Girl charged with assaulting dean

A sophomore at Fels High Schools was charged with assaulting a school official last week.

The student, who district officials declined to identify, punched the school's dean of students in the face after the official refused to let the girl into the gym around 10 a.m. last Tuesday, a district spokesman said Tuesday.

The student was arrested by Philadelphia police and charged with aggravated assault. She'd also been suspended and has been referred for expulsion.

The dean was treated for a cut to her lip and also required dental work, he said.

"We'll be following this case and making sure that it goes all the way to court," said spokesman Fernando Gallard. "This is an outrageous attack on a school official."

The official returned to work on Monday.
