Sports betting: Tiger Woods’ win was massive, but these Eagles’ Super Bowl 52 payouts are still William Hill’s largest

James Adducci, the sage bettor who hit William Hill for $1.19 million on Tiger Woods’ win at the Masters, received his check today in Las Vegas.

Adducci, 39, placed $85,000 at 14-1 odds on Woods to win his first major in more than a decade. Adducci said it was his first sports bet ever. He flew to Vegas just to make the wager -- two separate bets of $42,500 -- and returned home to Wisconsin.

It’s the largest golf wager ever paid by William Hill-US, but not its largest payout ever.

That distinction still belongs to three Eagles bets made the week before Super Bowl 52.

>>Two were money-line bets for $1 million. One had odds of +165 and paid $1.65 million; another had odds of +$155, which paid $1.55 million.

>>The third-highest payout was a $1.6 million wager with the Eagles getting 4.5 points against the Patriots. When Nick Foles and the Birds won the game outright, that bettor won $1,434,782.

That was the last Super Bowl before the explosion of sports betting outside of Nevada after a Supreme Court ruling last May.

The bet on Woods was made at a William Hill-US sportsbook in southern Nevada. William Hill has more than 100 operations nationwide, including the Ocean Casino Resort and Tropicana sportsbooks in Atlantic City.

When Woods trailed by just two shots heading into the final round, William Hill-US CEO Joe Asher acknowledged to the Inquirer that he wasn’t rooting for Woods, but “if he does [win], good for him and good for those who bet on him.”

FanDuel also reported more than $2 million in Tiger payouts, plus it was refunding another $1 million to all customers who entered its Masters fantasy contest. FanDuel had Woods at 18-1 before the tournament and just a shade under 4-1 before he teed off for the final round and won his 15th major championship.

After the win Sunday, FanDuel posted 5-1 odds that Woods would tie Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 career majors and 10-1 that he would break it.

Shed no tears for bookmakers, however. Woods played in 28 majors during his drought from 2008 until this weekend and made plenty of money for the bookies.

After Woods sealed his win Sunday, William Hill director of trading Nick Bogdanovich noted, “It’s great to see Tiger back. It’s a painful day for William Hill — our biggest golf loss ever — but a great day for golf.”

Asher remarked: “It’s an amazing story, isn’t it? Given how high he was, then how low he was, and now on top again after so long."

It is. But around here, “Philly Philly” still rules.

In the opener, I’d like to jump on Philly, but will wait until this series moves back to Brooklyn to open the wallet.

In the nightcap, cannot bring myself to lay 14 points, but do have some cool stats.

Shall we just give the Warriors the trophy tonight? C’mon, really, who is gonna beat them? They started to turn up the heat at the end of March, and have won seven of the last eight. And just in case you are wondering about the gigantic 14-point spread, lemme inform you that the Clippers stumble into Game 2 on an 0-5 spread perfecto.

Looking at the big picture, the Dubs’ overall spread log sits at 36-46-1, 17-24-1 at home and 32-43-1 as a favorite. The Clips’ overall spread mark is 45-37-1, 23-18-1 on the road and 16-22-1 as an underdog.

Monday’s NHL

Vic is gonna slide down to Carolina and look for the Hurricanes to grab a win against the Capitals.

This is the first home playoff games for the 'Canes since 2009, and the PNC Arena will be bonkers. The bad news is, they have not had much success against the Caps. But the good news is, they have won 16 of the last 22 at home.

And if you have not seen Carolina celebrate after a win at home, check out YouTube. The Hurricanes have done the Limbo, human bowling and “Duck, Duck, Goose,” and even had an entire baseball sequence. No doubt Washington is the better team, and will win the series, but gimme just one win at home for the Hurricanes, and make sure that you hang around for the celebration.
