Taxi drivers adapt waiting lot to their needs

Taxi operators have adapted their longtime airport waiting lot to their needs, such as by constructing a makeshift mosque in a trailer for the many Muslim drivers. Now, the airport plans to close the lot and remove the mosque, citing traffic concerns and the reduced demand for cabs.

Taxis are parked Tuesday outside the makeshift mosque during the time for dhuhr, the midday prayer, in the waiting lot for airport taxi drivers on Island Avenue in Philadelphia. The mosque, created and paid for by drivers, has existed in some fashion for the many years that drivers have been using the lot to wait for fares.
