Mike Magee has played every position for Los Angeles this season, from defender, midfielder, forward, even goalkeeper for one game in June.
On Sunday, it was his scoring touch that gave the Galaxy an advantage in their MLS Cup playoff series against New York.
Magee scored off a long cross from David Beckham in the 15th minute, giving the Galaxy a 1-0 road win over the Red Bulls in the first leg of their Western Conference semifinals series in Harrison, N.J.
Magee's goal enables Los Angeles to head home needing only a tie or win Thursday night to advance.
Magee got past the defense on a 45-yard pass from Beckham. While most of New York's players stood and watched, thinking the play was offside, Magee pushed the ball past Red Bulls keeper Frank Rost for the goal.
The game was marred by an incident after the final whistle involving four players, two from each team.
Landon Donovan apparently said something to New York's Rafa Marquez, who then took the ball and fired it at Donovan. In the scrum that ensued, the Galaxy's Juninho threw a punch at Red Bulls defender Stephen Keel. Both Marquez and Juninho were given red cards and will miss the next game on Thursday.
Bunbury at the double. Kansas City's Teal Bunbury scored twice as Sporting took a 2-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids in Commerce City, Colo., in the first leg of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. The second goal came on a penalty kick.
Colorado was without midfielder Jamie Smith, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Thursday in the defending MLS Cup champions' wild-card victory over Columbus.
The Rapids lost two more in Sunday's game: Caleb Folan (left knee) and Kosuke Kimura (left foot).
Saborio lifts Real. After Saturday's 3-0 win over Seattle, Real Salt Lake appears to have erased doubts that they could regain the form they showed early in the season after failing to win over the final two months of the regular season.
Alvaro Saborio scored two goals to lift Salt Lake past the Sounders at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, in the first leg of their Western Conference semifinal series.
