Independence's Lindsey gets a (very) late assist

Things are going well for Lori Lindsey. The Independence midfielder picked up an assist two days after Sunday's 3-1 win over the visiting Washington Freedom. Lindsey was also named the Women's Professional Soccer player of the week.

Originally, the assist on Amy Rodriguez's goal that tied the score at 1-1 in the 54th minute was credited to Joanna Lohman. That was changed to give credit for the assist to Holmfridur Magnusdottir. Finally, after a review by the league, the assist was awarded to Lindsey.

The result gave Lindsey the assist on all four Independence goals this season.

"I guess things are going well, when you get an assist after the game," Lindsey said, laughing.

The Independence (1-0-2) resume action at 6 p.m. Saturday against the expansion Atlanta Beat (0-2-1), at West Chester University. The teams played to a scoreless tie in their opener on April 11.

In the last few months Lindsey also has established herself as a key performer for the U.S. national team.

And her energy and great vision has teamed well with midfielder Caroline Seger to give the Independence a dangerous attacking tandem.

"We are similar players but also have our different styles, and I think we have really complemented each other," Lindsey said.

As for being named the player of the week, Lindsey said this individual honor is a credit to her team.

"It's very exciting," she said about the honor. "But I play the balls, and my teammates finish them."

Last season, Lindsey had two goals and one assist in 19 games, including 18 starts for the Freedom. She was the Independence's first pick in the expansion draft, and it has turned out to be among the team's shrewdest moves, as the 30-year-old is playing the best soccer of her career.

"I have more freedom to do different things than I did in D.C.," Lindsey said. "I am an older player and have more responsibility as a leader."
