Sixers' Joel Embiid's facial expressions tell the story of 2017 NBA draft lottery

To start, the Lakers top-3 protected pick landed just out of the Sixers' reach.

The 2017 NBA draft lottery Tuesday night didn't go exactly as Sixers fans and players had hoped, and it showed in the expressions on Joel Embiid's face and in the subsequent fan reactions on social media.

To start, the Lakers top-three-protected pick landed just out of the Sixers' reach.

And then they were left holding the third overall selection.

But even with their discontent with the team's luck, people seemed to be more preoccupied by Embiid's facial expressions during the selection ... process.

In the run-up to the 9 p.m. selections, one person's shadow loomed large over the proceedings.

At a pre-draft party at Xfinity Live!, hosted by 610WIP's Spike Eskin and attended by devout supporters of ex-Sixers GM Sam Hinkie, Hinkie was honoroed with a memorial banner that was raised to the rafters of the South Philadelphia entertainment venue.

And then the selections were made.

Can't win them all.
