Stairs reportedly to interview for spot on Phillies' telecasts

LAST WEEK, Matt Stairs announced through his Twitter account that he was headed to today's Wing Bowl at the Wells Fargo Center.

But it turns out he has some business to attend to in Philly, too.

Stairs, a member of the 2008 world champion Phillies, will interview with Comcast SportsNet for the vacant TV broadcasting job, according to an MLB.com report.

Stairs, 45, retired as a player after spending the 2011 season with the Washington Nationals. He worked as an in-studio analyst for NESN in Boston during the 2012 season.

Stairs leads major league baseball in pinch-hit home runs, with 23 in the regular season in his career. That does not include the most famous of his career. On Oct. 13, 2008, Stairs' go-ahead, two-run homer off Jonathan Broxton at Dodger Stadium in the eighth inning sent the Phillies to a 7-5 win in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series.

Stairs also played for the 2009 Phillies, who won the NL pennant before losing to the New York Yankees in the World Series.

Stairs is the latest in a long line of former Phillies being considered for Comcast's color commentator job, which opened when Chris Wheeler and Gary Matthews were removed from the broadcast team earlier this month.

Mitch Williams, Mickey Morandini and Kevin Stocker, members of the 1993 National League champion Phillies, are among the candidates. According to MLB.com, Jamie Moyer, also a member of the '08 and '09 Phillies, also interviewed for the job.

Brad Lidge (a third member of the '08 Phillies to be considered) was considered one of Comcast's top choices, but he took his name out of the running earlier in the process.

Comcast is likely to make its hire relatively soon: The Phillies make their first 2014 TV appearance on the network on Feb. 26, when they host the Toronto Blue Jays in their Grapefruit League opener.
