Putting on hairs to meet challenge

JOSH REDDICK has gotten himself into a hairy situation.

The A's outfielder opened the season with facial hair that rivals that of Michael J. Fox in "Teen Wolf."

Last month, Reddick accepted a beard-growing challenge from WWE wrestler Daniel Bryan.

On the top of his Twitter account, Reddick proudly proclaims: "I have two jobs . . . Play baseball and BEAT DANIEL BRYAN IN A BEARDOFF!"

So far, it looks like Reddick will win.

A photo circulating on the Internet shows last year's Gold Glove winner with the hair on his head combed over his face. It's hard to tell where that hair ends and the beard begins. And, he's wearing sunglasses, which makes him look like he's related to Cousin It. Or one of those cavemen in the Geico commercials.

On Wednesday, Reddick tweeted a message to all those who don't like his look.

"To everybody telling me to shave or those who will tell me to shave. NO," he wrote.

Geno: Cuban off mark

On Tuesday, Mavs owner Mark Cuban said he would consider drafting Brittney Griner, the 6-8 Baylor star who dunked the ball 18 times in her college career.

On Wednesday, Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma pretty much said that Cuban was nuts.

"Mark Cuban is a genius,'' Auriemma said during a conference call. "He's done an awful lot for basketball. But his genius would take a huge hit if he drafted her. It would be a public relations thing, a sham. To think a woman could compete to the level of [NBA players] is ludicrous.''

The ball, as they say, is now in your court, Mr. Cuban.

Hank had a blast

On this date in 1974, the Braves' Hank Aaron tied Babe Ruth's home-run record on Opening Day. Aaron hit his 714th dinger to left-centerfield off the Reds' Jack Billingham in the first inning.

And there wasn't a performancing-enchancing drug in sight.
