AL | Schilling, Red Sox top the Orioles, 6-1

BALTIMORE - Curt Schilling pitched seven innings of five-hit ball, David Ortiz drove in the tiebreaking with a bloop single in the seventh, and the Boston Red Sox exploited Baltimore's revamped bullpen in a 6-1 victory over the Orioles last night.

After losing two straight to Toronto by a combined 17-6 score, Boston scored five runs over the final three innings to avoid its first three-game skid of the season. Alex Cora hit his first homer for the Red Sox, who have won 16 of their last 19 games against the Orioles.

Schilling (3-1) gave up one run, struck out three and walked two. The 40-year-old righthander gave up a home run to Miguel Tejada but allowed only one other batter beyond second base.

Orioles starter Daniel Cabrera (1-2) pitched well but was victimized by the bullpen in Baltimore's third straight defeat. The righthander left in the seventh after getting two outs and walking two batters with the score tied at 1.

Jamie Walker came in to face Ortiz, who worked the count to 3-2 before plopping an opposite-field single in front of charging leftfielder Jay Payton. Manny Ramirez then stopped an 0-for-12 drought with an RBI single off Chad Bradford, who forced in a run by walking J.D. Drew and Mike Lowell.

Tigers 6, White Sox 2

CHICAGO - Chad Durbin struck out a career-high nine in eight innings and Magglio Ordoñez had three hits and three RBIs against his former team as Detroit defeated Chicago.

Ivan Rodriguez also had three hits for the Tigers.

Joel Zumaya couldn't complete the shutout, walking four and allowing two runs in 2/3 of an inning. Todd Jones finished off the four-hitter by getting Brian Anderson to ground out with the bases loaded. It was Jones' eighth save in 10 chances.

Indians 8, Rangers 7

CLEVELAND - Jhonny Peralta singled home the winning run with one out in the 11th inning to give Cleveland the victory over Texas, whose batters struck out a team-record 19 times.

Royals 4, Twins 3

MINNEAPOLIS - David DeJesus and Mike Sweeney combined to send Minnesota to its first four-game losing streak since last June.

DeJesus had three hits, including a home run, and Mike Sweeney also homered in Kansas City's victory.

Odalis Perez (2-2) beat the Twins for the second time in six days.

Mariners 2, A's 0

OAKLAND, Calif. - Jarrod Washburn (1-2) pitched a three-hit shutout and Jose Guillen and Kenji Johjima each hit a bases-empty homer to power Seattle past Oakland.

NEW YORK - The game between the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees was rained out.

With a steady rain falling on the field, the game was called about an hour before it was supposed to start. No makeup date was immediately announced.
