The Phillies said yesterday they would look at ways to improve college nights at Citizens Bank Park after Wednesday's first college night got out of hand.
Rowdy fans threw objects from the upper deck onto the field and fans below. There were 31 ejections Wednesday, which is higher than normal. There also were reports of fights.
"We're very pleased about the increased attendance and interest by the college fans," said Mike Stiles, senior vice president for administration and operations. "But we have to curtail college fans or anybody else who engages in misbehavior that takes away from the rest of our fans' enjoyment of the game. And so we're going to explore ways to do that, and we have to find the right balance."
There were 41,516 fans at Wednesday's 3-2 loss in 11 innings.
The Phillies have five more college nights scheduled this season.
Honoring Robinson
Shortstop
Jimmy Rollins
will wear No. 42 on Jackie Robinson Day, April 15, at Citizens Bank Park. Baseball retired Robinson's number, but the commissioner's office has allowed players to wear it that day to honor Robinson.
Garcia's rehab
Righthander
Freddy Garcia
, who is on the disabled list with biceps tendinitis, made a rehabilitation start last night for single-A Clearwater. In 31/3 shutout innings, he allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out seven. He is expected to make another rehab start Tuesday.
The lineup shuffle
Ryan Howard
returned to the cleanup spot and
Chase Utley
was back in the third spot in yesterday's 8-4 loss to Atlanta. Manager
Charlie Manuel
said he liked the matchups with Braves lefthander
Chuck James
.
Manuel could flip them again tonight in Florida.
Condrey delivers
Righthander
Clay Condrey
struck out the first five batters he faced, which fell one short of tying the franchise record for consecutive strikeouts by a relief pitcher.
Willie Hernandez
struck out six in a row in 1983.
Extra bases
Rightfielder
Shane Victorino
did not start yesterday, but Manuel said it had nothing to do with his baserunning gaffe in Tuesday's loss. Victorino was thrown out trying to steal third base with one out in the eighth inning and Howard batting. Manuel said Victorino has had a stiff back, and the manager wanted to give him a day off.
Jayson Werth
started in right instead. . . . The Elias Sports Bureau said
Ryan Madson
was the first pitcher in 20 years to lose his team's first two games of the season.
Bill Campbell
lost twice to open the season for the Boston Red Sox in 1977.
