Conwell-Egan beat host Penn Charter, 41-14, Saturday afternoon in an eventful game that featured two of the area's best running backs.

Boston College commit Patrick Garwo and Temple commit Edward Saydee — two physical runners with whits, wiggle and a knack for making big plays — did not disappoint.

In addition to standout running backs, Garwo and Saydee are also savvy, hard-hitting safeties.

On Saturday, Garwo (below) finished with 214 yards (164 in the second half) and two touchdowns on 20 carries. The dynamic 5-foot-9, 210-pound bulldozer also added a key 12-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter.

Saydee, a 6-foot, 185-pounder, had 164 yards and a score on 16 carries. He also had a long touchdown run negated by a first-half holding penalty.

The Eagles (3-0) prevailed because their deep and talented squad received contributions from relatively unheralded standouts.

Senior receiver Sean Stokes started the scoring in an unfamiliar manner, catching a pass behind the line of scrimmage then throwing the ball to Terome Mitchell for a 30-yard score.

"Never in my life," Stokes said when asked if he had ever thrown a touchdown pass before.

Sophomore Andrew Garwo, Patrick's younger brother, added a key, momentum-seizing 20-yard touchdown on a 4th-and-15 with 13.4 seconds left in the first half.

Andrew Garwo also added an interception on the opening drive of the third quarter.

Saydee (below) eventually got the Quakers (1-1) within, 21-14, late in the third quarter.

But Garwo responded almost immediately with a 66-yard run, followed by a critical 12-yard touchdown catch early in the fourth.

Terome Mitchell (below) later left no doubt with a pick-6 that shut the door on the Quakers.

The senior multipurpose threat added a late interception, dropped a potential third pick and added 47 yards on four carries.

Garwo and Saydee both briefly succumbed to cramps late in the second half but finished with aplomb on both sides of the ball.

The Eagles remained undefeated and were all smiles after the game. They will begin Catholic League Blue division play next week at Lansdale Catholic. Penn Charter travels to Central for its next opponent. The Quakers open Inter-Ac play Oct. 12 against defending champion Malvern Prep.
