Friday’s Southeastern Pa. roundup: Pennsbury win in double OT

Pennsbury's Christine Cataldo-Smith helped lead the reigning District 1 Class 4A girls' soccer champs to a 2-1 double overtime win against Boyertown in Friday's season opener.

Cataldo-Smith tied the game in the second half after a goal from Boyertown's Maggie Kiene and scored the game-winner for Pennsbury in the second overtime.

Julia Mirarchi headed in a late pass from Marisa Lobb to give Cardinal O'Hara a 2-1 victory against Friends' Central. Izzy MacFarlane put Friends' Central up 1-0 in the second half, but Julia Stellabotte tied the game with five minutes to go, and Lobb found Mirarchi for the game-winner in the final moments of the match. Kerry Patterson made four saves for O'Hara.

Meghan McNesby and JoJo McShane each scored two goals as Springside Chesnut Hill defeated Archbishop Wood, 7-1. The Blue Devils also got goals from Maya McDermott, Madison Niebish, and Lizzie Stokes.

Natalie Sgro scored a hat trick and added an assist as Baldwin defeated Bonner-Prendergast, 8-0. Sammy Baron, Relly Ladner, Jane McAleese , Celia Page, and Josie Stockett all scored once, while Gia Vicari had two assists. Simi and Rani Bleznak each picked up two saves to combine for the shutout in goal.

Episcopal Academy got two goals and an assist from Anna Salvucci in a 4-1 victory against Radnor.  Lauren Cunningham, Olivia Dirks, and Raina Kuzemka also scored for Episcopal.

Cailin Panacek scored once and added two assists in Gwynedd Mercy's 6-1 win against Archbishop Carroll. Along with Panacek's score, the Monarchs also got goals from Samantha Berish, Molly Hanson, Emily Meenan, Kiera Thomas and Morgan Zipfel.

Maggie Bordonaro scored a hat trick and Ruby Murray added a goal as Methacton took down North Penn, 4-2. Methacton goalkeeper Liz Greene made 10 saves for the Warriors.

Logan Morris scored the lone goal in Penncrest's 1-0 victory against Lower Moreland.

Boys' Soccer

Miguel Fuentes put home a corner kick from Matthew Wellener in the 70th minute to deliver Great Valley a 1-0 victory against Phoenixville. Patriots' goalkeeper Quintin Wrabley made five saves to record the shutout and hold on for the win.

Abington's Sean Touey, who led the Suburban Once Conference in scoring a season ago, picked up right where he left off last year in the Ghosts' 3-0 win against Council Rock North. Touey scored two goals and assisted on another in the victory. Nevin Baer added a goal and two assists for Abington.

Harrison Block scored twice and Josh Axelrod picked up a goal and an assist in Lower Merion's 5-0 win against Avon Grove. Shane Brown and Cole Sanchez also scored for the Aces, while Lincoln and Ethan Blouin, Wyatt Joseph, and Isaac Brainsky tallied assists. Dan Rosen, Andrew Weitz, and Asa Kosta all combined for the shutout in goal.

Springfield (M) got two goals from Cole Hutchinson in a 5-0 victory against Bishop McDevitt. Anthony Forgione, Matt Schidt, and Kyle Smith also scored. Goalkeeper Julian Brown tallied six saves and recorded the shutout.

Shipley and Germantown Academy ended in a 1-1 draw after two overtimes. Germantown Academy's Kolby Palmer tied the game in the second half, and goalkeeper Ryan Fairlie made a key save in the first overtime to help keep the score level.

Alessandro Vennettilli and Josh Moyer combined for a shutout in net as Perkiomen Valley defeated Marple Newtown, 3-0. Max Chamorro, AJ Hansen, and Matt Holmes scored for the Vikings. Chamorro and Steve Warren also added assists.

Max Brown's hat trick helped Penncrest cruise to a 5-1 victory against Interboro. Nate Rogers added a goal and an assist, and Colby Schynde scored once in the win.

Max Emery and Trevian Fleming scored one goal apiece in Abington Friends' 2-1 victory against Phil-Mont Christian. Noah Mass saved seven shots for Abington Friends.

Unionville used two goals from Michael Hewes and one from Tommy Kelly to earn a 3-0 win against Penn Wood. Hewes and Kelly each added an assist, and Alex Dolce recorded four saves to post the shutout in net.

Strath Haven's Gavin Birch scored the lone goal off an assist from Nate Perrins in the Panthers' 1-0 win against West Chester Rustin. Noah Atsaves recorded eight saves in the shutout.

Bailey Moyer scored a goal and assisted on another in Central Bucks West's 2-0 victory against Owen J. Roberts. Alan Zlotin scored the other goal for the Bucks.

Zach Delone Cesar May, and Nate McCourt all scored as Downingtown East defeated Bensalem, 3-0.

Alex Kades' late penalty kick pushed Harriton past Methacton for a 2-1 win.

Field Hockey

Upper Merion defeated Norristown, 7-0, in the Battle of the Bridge. Anya Waller and Anandeep Singh combined for a shutout in goal as Samme Deskiewicz recorded a hat trick for the Vikings. Deann Boyer had a goal and two assists, and Halle Howard, Nitzy Urias, and Molly Weygand all scored once.

Charlotte deKerillis scored twice and assisted twice in a 6-0 Springfield (M) victory against Lower Moreland. Charlotte Henry, Brigid Roy, Kate Wojeck, and Maddie Yoder also scored while Rebecca Berglund saved six shots in the shutout win.

Rachel Alderfer and Katy Benton scored two goals apiece, and Molly Frey saved eight shots in Methacton's 7-1 victory against North Penn. Liz Chipman added a goal and an assist.

Kelly Baittinger and Saige Shine each scored twice as Perkiomen Valley defeated Pennridge, 7-2. Julia Downing, Emma Lafferty, and Gabby Martina scored as well for the Vikings.

Lauren Curran had two goals and an assist, and Hanna Bodner scored once as Notre Dame defeated Penn Manor, 3-2. Emma Deberdine scored twice for Penn Manor in the loss.

Kate Christ scored twice and Ashley Della Guardia made six saves as Spring-Ford took down Unionville, 2-1.
