Eagles Notes: McCoy on talk about his exit: 'I love it here'

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - LeSean McCoy lay on the turf with the medical staff checking his left knee late in the fourth quarter of the Eagles' 34-26 win over the New York Giants on Sunday.

McCoy initially feared it was something serious, based on the way he went down. Other players knelt around him, hoping it wasn't.

McCoy eventually arose and limped off the field on his own power. He wanted to go back into the game, but the clock was winding down by that point.

The Eagles' Pro Bowl running back avoided a scare. The question now is whether that was his final carry with the team.

That question might seem absurd considering that McCoy, 26, rushed for 99 yards on Sunday to finish with 1,319 yards this season. It was the second-highest rushing total of his career, with both seasons coming under Chip Kelly. He was named to his third Pro Bowl in six seasons last week.

But McCoy is due to be paid $9.75 million with a salary-cap number of $11.95 million in 2015. That's a hefty price for a running back, and McCoy admitted that his future goes through his mind sometimes - especially after the Eagles jettisoned DeSean Jackson last offseason.

"The season just ended, and . . . I'm an Eagle. I love it here," McCoy said. "My six years here have been excellent. I've been very, very, very productive here. I have a great relationship with my coaches, the owner.

"We'll see what happens. It's a business. Anything can happen; I know that. But I'm sure we can work something out. And hopefully, everything does work out. They know how I feel about them. I know how they feel about me. So we'll see what happens. At the end of the day, it's a business."

McCoy might need to restructure his contract. He would be costly to cut, too, with the team absorbing $4.4 million in dead money. So there could be a solution amenable to both sides.

"It depends how they want to do it," McCoy said. ". . . I love this team, and I'll do whatever it takes. . . . We've got some time for that."

McCoy said the uncertainty of his future has not affected him this season. He endured criticism for the way he rushed earlier this season behind a depleted offensive line, and the lesson he learned is that nobody cares about the conditions - only the results.

The results were a drop from his record-setting 2013 campaign, but he still ranks No. 3 in the NFL in rushing. He proved he can endure a heavy load - McCoy was one of two running backs with more than 300 carries this season - and he remained healthy for the second consecutive season.

His red-zone touches declined and McCoy's fumbles increased. But he remains the Eagles' biggest star.

Still, with Kelly's boldness in cutting Jackson last spring and with the leaguewide devaluation of running backs, anything is possible.

"I'd be lying if I say it never flashes in my mind," McCoy said. "Because it happened to [Jackson], off his best year. So you never know."

First-round pick Marcus Smith did not play Sunday even though he was active. Smith did not play in eight games this season. . . . The Eagles will have the No. 20 pick in the 2015 draft. That is the lowest pick of any non-playoff team.
