Temple’s Michael Dogbe named AAC defensive player of the week

Dogbe had 3 1/2 tackles for loss, including 2 1/2 sacks, in the win over Maryland.

Temple defensive tackle Michael Dogbe has been named the American Athletic Conference's defensive player of the week after helping the Owls record a 35-14 win at Maryland on Saturday.

Dogbe had seven tackles, including 3 1/2 for losses and 2 1/2 sacks. He also was credited with two forced fumbles and was a major reason that the Owls held Maryland to 195 yards of offense.

After the game, the 6-foot-3, 280-pound graduate student said it was the best game of his career.

"He was all over the field and was dominant in the game," Temple coach Geoff Collins said Monday on a conference call with the media. "If you dominate the game from a defensive-tackle position, you will have a good game on defense as a whole, and I am really proud of Michael that he got the recognition from the conference. It was well deserved."

Temple (1-2) will return to action Thursday when the Owls host Tulsa in their first AAC game.

Will Nutile return?

The status of Owls quarterback Frank Nutile remains uncertain. Nutile missed Saturday's game because of an undisclosed injury. Anthony Russo said he didn't know he would be the starting quarterback until about an hour before the game.

Collins would not say who will start Thursday. "Frank has practiced, he looks better than he did last week, and we will keep evaluating one day at a time," Collins said.

BC starting time

Temple's game on Sept. 29 at Boston College will kick off at noon, according to a member of the AAC. The game will be televised on ESPN2 or ESPNU. The TV designation will be made after this weekend's games.
