Jeff Osberg of Huntingdon Valley Country Club captured his second straight Golf Association of Philadelphia major title on Friday, taking the 114th Patterson Cup in a four-hole playoff at his home course over David Hicks of Wildwood.

Osberg, 32, who also won last month's Philadelphia Open in the same fashion, in an aggregate-score playoff, defeated Hicks, 16 strokes to 18, to win GAP's stroke-play championship for the second time. He and Hicks finished with 36-hole scores of 3-under-par 137. Osberg shot a second-round 69 and Hicks fired a 67.

Hicks, who played ahead of Osberg, posted four birdies on the back nine and got to 3-under with a birdie on 17. Osberg's last of four birdies on the day came at No. 15, and he parred in.

Roland Massimino of Back Brook contended for the championship after an eagle on the par-5 15th hole but carded back-to-back bogeys on 16 and 17 for a 67 and third place at 139.

Philadelphia Amateur champion Michael McDermott of Merion shot his second straight 70 to join Ben Smith of Huntingdon Valley (68) and Max Siegfried of Aronimink (68) in a tie for fourth at 140.

Osberg also won his third Silver Cross, an award presented to the player who shoots the best combined score over 72 holes counting Philadelphia Amateur qualifying and the Patterson Cup.

Lutz wins in Britain

Chip Lutz of Reading, a five-time GAP senior player of the year, sank a 25-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the British Seniors Amateur at Formby, England, the third time he has won the championship.

Lutz, the reigning U.S. Senior Amateur champion, shot a 75 in the third round for a 4-over-par 220 total and tied Brady Exber of Las Vegas and Graham Bell of Scotland. Lutz then ended the playoff early on the 18th at Formby, making his birdie putt. Exber was short with his attempt, and Bell made bogey.

Lutz also captured the British Seniors in 2011 at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland and in 2012 at Machynys Peninsula in Wales. He won his first U.S. Senior Amateur last October at Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township. He will compete next week in the U.S. Senior Open.
