Byron Y. Fleck, 91, formerly of West Chester, a retired professor and dean at West Chester University, died Wednesday at Hickory House Nursing Home in Honey Brook.
A native of York, Pa., Dr. Fleck earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa. During World War II, he served in the Army as a supply officer. While stationed in Cheltenham, England, he met Phyllis Bridgeman at an officers' club dance. They married in 1943.
After his discharge, he earned a master's degree and a doctorate in history from the University of Iowa.
Dr. Fleck taught at Glenville State Teachers College in West Virginia before joining the faculty of West Chester State Teachers College, now University, in 1953. He taught history and later became dean of the former School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at West Chester. He was named dean emeritus in 1977.
Dr. Fleck was a stamp collector and enjoyed traveling, camping, Phillies baseball, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by sons Philip and Daryl; a daughter, Anne Kaczorowski; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His wife died in 2006.
