Philadelphia International Airport was shut down for about a half-hour Thursday morning after a man crashed through a gate in an SUV and drove onto the airfield.

Police said Kenneth Richard Mazik, 24, of Chadds Ford, was drunk when he rammed a black Jeep Cherokee through Gate 25, at the west end of the airport, about 11:15 a.m. Mazik quickly was taken into custody.

The Jeep reached an active runway, though no landings were scheduled there. Officials immediately closed the airport. About 15 aircraft were delayed in arriving and departing, said airport spokeswoman Victoria Lupica. No flights were diverted, she said, and air traffic resumed at 11:40 a.m.

Mazik was charged with state counts of driving under the influence, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and related offenses. Federal authorities also may file charges against him.
