Pa. board to hear quest for fewer SugarHouse slots

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board will consider Thursday whether the SugarHouse Casino may open with fewer slot machines than agreed upon in its license. Because of space constraints, SugarHouse wants to operate with 1,550 to 1,600 slots rather than the prescribed 1,700. Lawyers for the state's Office of Enforcement Counsel object to the reduction, saying SugarHouse has not shown how it intends to replace the lost revenue from fewer slots. SugarHouse also has applied to the board to add 42 table games to its interim casino, set to open in the fall in Fishtown and Northern Liberties. A public hearing on that matter is scheduled for May 19 at Community College of Philadelphia. - Jennifer Lin
