PGW fixing Tacony gas leak

Philadelphia Gas Works employees were called to repair a natural-gas leak Sunday on Torresdale Avenue in the Tacony section, not far from the scene of the gas-main explosion that killed a utility worker and injured six others this month.

Sunday's leak was in a 6-inch line, PGW spokesman Cameron Kline said.

"Right now, the area is safe, and we have no customers who are currently out of service," he said. "This is not a unique situation. This is a simple fix on which we are working on right now."

The Philadelphia Fire Department called PGW around 9 a.m. Sunday about a natural-gas odor near Torresdale and Tyson Avenues, Kline said.

Authorities evacuated five people from Holy Innocents St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 7001 Torresdale Ave., Executive Fire Chief Daniel Williams said. They were later allowed back into the building, and no other residents were evacuated.

The Jan. 18 explosion occurred when a 12-inch main exploded in the 6900 block of Torresdale. PGW employee Mark Keeley, 19, was killed.
