Two passengers were hospitalized when the SEPTA trolley they were riding collided with a van this morning.

SEPTA said the Route 34 trolley was involved in a crash with a van at 55th Street and Baltimore Avenue at about 8 a.m.

Preliminary information indicated that the van may have run a red light at the intersection, striking the westbound trolley, SEPTA said.

Two trolley riders were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for treatment. The severity of their injuries wasn't immediately known.

No injuries were reported to anyone in the van.

The crash remains under investigation.

Shuttle buses were running in place of trolleys between 40th Street and 61st Street for about an hour and a half after the accident. Normal service has now resumed.
