An elderly man was killed in a hit and run in Fairhill around 2 a.m. Sunday morning, Philadelphia police said.

An elderly man was killed in a hit and run in Fairhill around 2 a.m. Sunday morning, Philadelphia police said.

Reinaldo Barreto, 78, was crossing Lehigh Avenue near Mascher Street, about a mile from his North Philadelphia home, when a vehicle ran a red light and struck him. He was transported to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses described the suspect vehicle as a white SUV or mini van, which took off eastbound on Lehigh Avenue following the accident.    - James Osborne
