Carli Lloyd on World Cup win: A 'glorious moment'

Carli Lloyd doesn't think about the moment she missed a penalty kick in United States' loss against Japan in the 2011 Women's World Cup final, she said Monday morning on "CBS This Morning."

"It's all in the past, it is what it is," Lloyd said. "It's part of the journey, part of the story … I think things and struggles you go through in life, it's how you bounce back," the Delran native said on the show.

But Lloyd more than bounced back on Sunday night in the Women's World Cup final as she led the United States to a spectacular 5-2 win over Japan with a hat trick – the first ever in final history.

"If you have a dream, it's definitely achievable through hard work, through dedication, sacrifice, everything," she told CBS. "We've had dreams of our own, we've had struggles, we've been cut from teams and we still all managed to get here to this point and I think it's just an amazing accomplishment."

While Lloyd was the star in ending the team's 16-year World Cup victory drought, she noted that every member of the team contributed to the win.

"It was a glorious moment and every single player on this team should be proud because every single player has contributed in some fashion," Lloyd said. "It's just unbelievable that 16 years later we finally won a World Cup and we are a part of history and this is a moment we will never ever forget."

Lloyd, who had been wearing the captain's armband throughout the final, put the armband on Abby Wambach when she entered the game, in a display of admiration for her teammate.

"It wasn't because I thought it was the right thing to do, I wanted to do it," Lloyd said on CNN's "New Day" Monday morning. "She's a legend, this was her last World Cup game, and it was something special because she has inspired so many of us on and off the field throughout her career." Lloyd also told CNN that she just wants to "be a good role model to all the young kids and boys out there as well and just to teach them the importance of doing all the right things in order to accomplish your dreams."

On NBC's TODAY show, Lloyd said she was still "savoring the moment" of the team's win and her history-making hat trick.

For Lloyd and her teammates, the win is "something that we'll cherish for the rest of our lives," she told host Matt Lauer.

Lloyd said the win was especially special after the United States' loss to Japan in the 2011 Women's World Cup final.

"It was unbelievable, and something that we all have wanted for so long," she said.

During the interview, Lloyd was sporting a new "World Champions" shirt with three gold stars -- each representing a U.S. Women's World Cup win -- emblazoned above the team's logo.

"We look down at these stars, and one of those stars belongs to us, and it will always belong to us, and we're just super, super happy," she said.
