A decision on whether the Criminal Justice Center will be open Monday for court business will be announced by court officials on Sunday. The center has been closed since Thursday, after a structural failure involving two elevators injured two employees.

Sgt. Paul Owens, a 29-year sheriff's deputy who was in one of the elevators and was injured in the mishap, remained in critical condition Friday at Hahnemann University Hospital, said Hahnemann spokesman Phil Ellingsworth Jr.

The official cause of the incident has not been determined. Elevators at the center are being tested, which will continue through the weekend.

The mayor's office said Friday that the elevators were last inspected in June by a state-certified, independent inspector.
