Montco's Gerber ends reelection bid

State Rep. Mike Gerber, a Montgomery County Democrat, announced Thursday that he was ending his reelection bid in order to take a job with a Philadelphia investment firm.

State Rep. Mike Gerber, a Montgomery County Democrat, announced Thursday that he was ending his reelection bid in order to take a job with a Philadelphia investment firm.

His departure leaves county Democrats scrambling to find a replacement to run in the 148th District, which includes Conshohocken, Narberth, Whitemarsh, and parts of Lower Merion, Whitpain, Plymouth, and Upper Dublin.

"I know some friends, colleagues, supporters, and party enthusiasts might be disappointed with my decision and its timing," Gerber, 40, said in a statement posted on his legislative and campaign websites.

Gerber said he agreed Wednesday to join Franklin Square Capital Partners as senior vice president of public affairs, strategy, and product administration.

"I hope [those who are disappointed] respect the opportunity this presents for my family and appreciate the effort I have given to serving the commonwealth and my district over the past eight years," he said.

Gerber is best known for advocating for a statewide smoking ban in most restaurants and offices, which passed. He has pushed for a ban on school sales of fatty snacks and sugary drinks.

He took office in 2005 after defeating incumbent Republican Melissa Murphy Weber in a tight race the previous year. His subsequent reelection victories have been by landslide margins.

Gerber said he would remain in office until his term ends Nov. 30.

As part of his job switch, he will leave the Drinker, Biddle & Reath law firm.

Gerber, of Whitpain, is married with three children.
