A police officer has been arrested and charged with assaulting a man in his custody.
Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said in a statement today that Officer Chad Gugger arrested the man after a foot chase near 53d Street and Baltimore Avenue on Oct. 9, 2005.
The unidentified man, who was charged with disorderly conduct, filed a complaint two months later, alleging that after he was handcuffed, Gugger "physically abused him," the statement said.
After an Internal Affairs investigation, Gugger was charged in a warrant with aggravated assault, a felony, and six misdemeanor counts of assault, reckless endangerment, making false statements, and tampering with evidence.
Gugger, who was assigned to the 18th District and has been on the force for almost three years, was arrested Wednesday at Internal Affairs' offices.
Sylvester has suspended Gugger for 30 days with the intent to dismiss.
