Man who fatally shot self in chase is ID'd

The man fatally shot Wednesday in Port Richmond while being chased by police has been identified as Edward Day, 33, of Cedar Avenue near 51st Street, West Philadelphia, police said.

The man fatally shot Wednesday in Port Richmond while being chased by police has been identified as Edward Day, 33, of Cedar Avenue near 51st Street, West Philadelphia, police said.

The gunman had robbed the nearby Affordable Roofing Co. on Pacific Street near Allen shortly after 8 a.m. and exchanged shots with police before shooting himself in the head. He also suffered a wound of the shoulder after being shot by an officer, police said.

Chief Inspector Joseph Fox said yesterday that Day had a criminal history of "about seven pinches," including arrests for aggravated assault and theft.

Day's family declined to comment on the incident last night. *
