Dobbins' Wright heads Daily News All-City Team

ALTHOUGH Murrell Dobbins Tech has never been mistaken for a long-term power among city leagues' basketball programs, its better products have certainly been top-notch.

The latest dandy is senior center Jerrell Wright, and today he is being honored as the Player of the Year in connection with the Daily News' All-City Team.

The 6-8 Wright, who is bound for La Salle, becomes the third Mustang to win POY honors, joining Horace "Pappy" Owens (now a La Salle assistant) in 1979 and Doug Overton in 1987 (played college ball at La Salle before advancing to the NBA), and the fifth to earn first-team honors; the others were Eric "Hank" Gathers and Greg "Bo" Kimble in 1985.

Wow, what a squad! Overton at the point. Owens on the wing. Kimble at the small forward. Gathers and Wright bumpin' and grindin' inside.

The lefthanded Wright, who shows good feet and a deft shooting touch, along with a relentless nature, this season scored 459 points in 23 games for the 15-8 Mustangs, whose full potential was unrealized because of floor-leadership issues. He also averaged 14 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Thumbnail sketches of the other first-teamers:

* Lamin Fulton, Neumann-Goretti: As the only returning starter, the 5-9 point guard used his playing/leadership skills to pace the Saints to repeat perfection in the Catholic League, and to another AAA state championship. Scored 480 points in 31 games (15.5) while also averaging 4.1 assists and 1.8 steals. Career numbers: 1,039 points, 233 assists, 147 steals. St. Peter's signee.

* Juan'ya Green, Carroll: The smooth 6-3 wing guard led the Patriots to the CL final, while scoring 560 points in 27 games (20.7) and posting averages of 5.4 for assists and 1.5 for steals. His 52 percent floor shooting included 37 percent from behind the arc. Carroll's all-time leading scorer with 1,493 points. Also had 416 rebounds and 407 assists. Niagara signee.

* Ameen Tanksley, Imhotep: The 6-5 guard-forward, who's best on the move and, like Wright, is a lefty, led the AA state champs' highly balanced attack with 433 points in 34 games (12.7). Also averaged 6.2 rebounds and 1.9 steals. Rang up 1,101 career points (played at Prep Charter through 10th grade). Also bound for Niagara.

* Eddie Mitchell, La Salle: This 6-foot speed merchant, a point guard, paced the Explorers to a second consecutive 20-win season, while averaging 16.1 points (27 games, 434 points), four rebounds (No. 2 on the team) and three assists. Shot 56 percent from the floor. Finished 18 points short of 1,000. Bound for Rider as La Salle's first recipient of a D-I scholarship since 1985.

Our Coach of the Year is Jim Rullo, of Malvern Prep.

Coming out of the 2009-10 season, he expected the return of his four best players, all of whom had already experienced great moments. However, three transferred and one did not make his move until two games had been played this season. Shaking off the various shocks, Rullo guided and molded his new group, and the result was the school's first outright Inter-Ac League championship since 1981. And it was even clinched with one game remaining.

Rullo, whose father, Jerry, was a member of the 1946-47 Philadelphia Warriors NBA champs, also had to deal with a personal issue throughout the season: While playing in a rec league, he suffered a blow to the face that, doctors fear, likely caused permanent vision problems in one eye.
