* To 49ers interim coach Mike
Singletary for sending tight end Vernon Davis to his room, er, the locker room during Sunday's 34-13 loss to Seattle after he picked up an inexcusable unnecessary roughness penalty for mockingly tapping the helmet of Seahawks safety Brian Russell after a 7-yard catch. When Davis tried to defend his actions to Singletary, he was told to get his helmet and hit the showers. "I will not tolerate players that think it's about them when it's about the team," said Singletary, the Hall of Fame linebacker who replaced fired Mike Nolan last week. "We cannot make decisions that cost the team, and then come off the sideline and it's nonchalant. I'd rather play with 10 people and just get penalized all the way until we have to do something else than play with 11 when I know that right now, that person is not sold on being a part of this team." Singletary hasn't won a game yet, but he's already my leading coach of the year candidate.
* To Dick Vermeil, who will be
inducted into the St. Louis Rams' Ring of Honor Sunday at halftime of their game against the Arizona Cardinals. Vermeil was the coach of the Rams' Super Bowl XXXIV championship team. He's also in the Eagles' Honor Roll. Vermeil purposely picked this weekend to be honored because Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner will be there. Warner quarterbacked that Rams Super Bowl team. "He deserves to be up there [in the Ring of Honor] more than I do," Vermeil said. Needless to say, a few tears will be shed.
