An 11-run scoring explosion by Columbia, Tenn., in the third inning last night doomed Boyertown to a 16-5 defeat at the American Legion World Series in Bartlesville, Okla.

Boyertown posted an 11-10 comeback win over Eden Prairie, Minn., on Saturday night. But the Bears (54-9) could not overtake Columbia (56-10) in suffering their first loss of the tournament.

Bears starter Chuck Nicholas tossed two shutout innings before the Tennessee team chased him in the third with a seven-run outburst.

Reliever Alex Neiman allowed four more runs in the inning and nine overall.

Boyertown will try to avoid elimination this afternoon when it faces Tucson, Ariz., which stayed alive with a 17-9 win over Branford, Conn., yesterday.

In Saturday night's win, the Bears came back from an early 6-0 deficit and won in the 10th inning when Steve Bealer scored the winning run from third base on Cody Kulp's groundout.

Boyertown forced extra innings by scoring three runs in the ninth to tie the score at 10-10.
