Elderly woman clubs burglar with baseball bat

An elderly woman apparently clubbed at least one of two men posing as gas workers who tried to break into her home in the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia this morning, according to a report filed with police.

Events began about 9:50 a.m. on the 1000 block of Granite Street when police received a call that two men, aged 20 to 25, and wearing all white jumpsuits tried to enter the house posing as PGW employees. The two-story home is just off Oxford Ave. in the Northwood section of Frankford.

Instead of gaining entrance, they were thwarted by the bat-wielding woman and left without taking anything, according to the initial call to police. The woman might also have been assaulted as she tried to fight them off.

Police were checking local hospitals to see if anyone reported a recent head injury.

However, police were still investigating the complaint and details could not be confirmed.

Check back for details as they develop.
