Forbidden Drive under Walnut Lane Bridge is closed

The Walnut Lane Bridge is still safe enough for cars, but Forbidden Drive and the parallel paths that run under it have been closed because "architectural concrete may be falling from the bridge," the city Streets Department and Parks and Recreation Department announced Wednesday.

The Walnut Lane Bridge is still safe enough for cars, but Forbidden Drive and the parallel paths that run under it have been closed because "architectural concrete may be falling from the bridge," the city Streets Department and Parks and Recreation Department announced Wednesday.

The 102-year-old concrete-arch bridge, which spans the Wissahickon Creek between West Mount Airy and Roxborough, will remain open to drivers because a recent investigation identified no "imminent structural issues."

Additional inspections are planned next week. Although recreational users cannot pass directly under the bridge, they can still use Forbidden Drive from Lincoln Drive to the bridge and from Northwestern Avenue to the bridge.
