A mangled heap of metal lay on the asphalt yesterday, marking the spot where a 68-year-old woman on a three-wheel motorized scooter had been killed by a truck.

Nearby, the truck that hit her sat with a sprung hood and its passenger door dangling. Police said the accident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. at Broad and Arch streets in Center City.

The truck was headed west when it hit the woman as she tried to cross on her scooter, police said.

The woman died at Hahnemann University Hospital shortly after 10 a.m., police said. Her identity was not released. The 39-year-old truck driver was questioned by police, but no charges were filed.

"I heard it. It was two hits," said Mike, a construction worker who asked that his last name not be used.

"The first one was quick, just boom! But the second one, that was slower. Man, it was awful." *
