Touting Israel's medical-pot law

Emmy Award-winning television personality Montel Williams, who was in Jerusalem on Sunday, says Israel is at the forefront of providing patient access to medical marijuana and the United States could take lessons. Williams was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999 and he is an outspoken advocate of medical marijuana to relieve pain caused by disease. The former host of The Montel Williams Show is meeting legislators, scientists, and physicians in Israel on a fact-finding mission. Kevorkian items a tough sell

A suicide machine belonging to assisted-suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian was withdrawn from a New York City auction of his possessions after failing to draw a high enough bid. Seventeen paintings also failed to sell at the New York Institute of Technology on Friday, including one made in Kevorkian's blood. The paintings are tied up in a legal dispute between his estate and a suburban Boston museum. The Armenian Library and Museum of America says that Kevorkian donated the paintings and that they will stay put until the dispute is resolved. The estate estimates their value at up to $3.5 million. Kevorkian died in June at age 83. He left his property to a niece in Troy, Mich.

Weekend box office

Puss in Boots is not just pussyfooting around. The animated offspring of the Shrek movie series led the box office with $34 million in ticket sales, one of the best Halloween weekend openings ever, but under some estimates.

The horror movie Paranormal Activity 3, dropped to second place with $18.5 million in sales in its second weekend. The science-fiction thriller In Time, with Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried, opened in third place with sales of $12 million. Rounding out the top five were Footloose at $5.4 million and The Rum Diary at $5 million, a disappointment for the Johnny Depp pic.
