The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission on Wednesday approved a $25,000 settlement with an unlicensed electricity supplier that signed up hundreds of commercial customers.

The PUC's Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement had originally sought $89,800 in civil penalties against Fair View Energy LLC of Erie, which advertised for customers statewide.

Under the terms of the settlement, Fair View acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and agreed to apply for a license, which was approved in a separate PUC action on Wednesday.

The penalty was the PUC's latest enforcement measure against rogue energy suppliers, whose misdeeds have bedeviled the deregulated-power industry.
