October First Friday picks: Art, Weezer cover bands, dance

Hey, look at that — it's October! Keeping with longstanding tradition here, we'll be out and about celebrating First Friday. If you're thinking along the same lines, here's where you'll find some exciting happenings on Friday, Oct. 3.

It's Friday, you can wine a little. Sommelier Candace Ryan will be discussing French wines at the American Philosophical Society Museum (104 S. 5th St.) to discuss the choice sips of Thomas Jefferson. Talks and tastings are at 5:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.

Kick it constitutionally with after-hours access to the Constitution Center (525 Arch St.) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Take advantage of the complimentary bites and discounted admission to the "Slavery at Jefferson's Monticello" exhibit.

Get ready for the impending Halloween season with a nighttime haunted tour of the Betsy Ross House (239 Arch St.) at 5:30 p.m. The spooks continue at sundown with a double feature outdoor horror screening of "A Bucket of Blood" and the original "Night of the Living Dead." BYOB and snacks for the ultimate movie night out.

The Barnes Foundation (2025 Benjamin Franklin Parkway) knows how to throw a party. They'll host flamenco dance group De Luna a Lunares for an evening of Spanish culture from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Learn about the important of dance in education, enjoy traditional fare, and see the museum's collection.

Artists, coders and designers wrote computer programs that generate art. So while the artists themselves didn't actually create any of the physical work, they did craft the lines of code that produced the final product. The exhibit, "Heavily Scripted," features sounds based on changes on Wikipedia entries, a software program that posts items from the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Craigslist, and more. The unique exhibit opens with an artist reception at Little Berlin (2430 Coral St.) from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

This month's exhibit at Pentimenti Gallery (145 N. 2nd St.) opens with an artist reception from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. "Complimentary Colors" features work from four artists based on their own varied interpretations of how the colors work together.

You might be the next great tango star, but you'll never know if you don't give it a try. For an hour at 7 p.m., Philadelphia Argentine Tango School (2030 Frankford Ave.) holds a free beginner Argentine Tango lesson. No partner necessary.

For fashionable souls, Toile Custom Atelier (1333 Frankford Ave.) is hosting two lines for a trunk show: Granate Pret and Blck Bts. From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., try on the wares, meet the designers, get dolled up and enjoy sweet bites.

A lot is going on at Yards Brewing Company (901 N. Delaware Ave.). First off, A Pynk Affair raises money for breast cancer awareness, research and treatment. Secondly, Yards Brewing Company's seasonal Pynk Ale and Little Baby's Ice Cream's Pynk Ale Ice Cream will be served. Finally, not one, but two Weezer tribute bands will be playing "Pinkerton" and the Blue Album in their entirety. It all starts at 7:30 p.m.

If you still haven't had your fill, come to North Bowl's (909 N. 2nd St.) upstairs loft for a little late-night action, starting at 9 p.m. Four local artists — Sam Cardelfe, Jacqui Powell, Nate Harris and Jordan Stiff — show their work, ranging in inspirational themes from the Talking Heads to disorder. Try to turn that down, paired with the fact that there'll be complimentary snacks and drink specials.
