More controversy was abound in NXT, as fans will have to wait at least one more week to find who in the world the next No. 1 contender for the NXT championship is going to be.
After a controversial ending to the No. 1 contender triple threat match a couple of weeks ago that saw both Sami Zayn and Samoa Joe force Baron Corbin to tap out, the two "winners" went at it one-on-one this week to decide the next challenger to Finn Balor's title once and for all.
Instead of the match getting rid of all of the confusion surrounding the title picture, Wednesday night's match only created more, as Zayn pinned Joe's shoulder's to the match after hitting the helluva kick.
However, Zayn's shoulders were on the mat as well, forcing referee Drake Wuertz to rule the match a draw. I usually give NXT some leeway when it comes to finishes like this, but this is getting quite ridiculous. Talk about dragging something out.
NXT general manager William Regal vowed that a No. 1 contender will be decided soon, which I'm assuming will be with yet another match between Zayn and Joe, only with a stipulation that does not allow for any controversy. I can't get too upset at that, as I'm sure Zayn and Joe will deliver a performance that will make up for all of this mess.
Other than this, not much occurred on the program. The show opened with an entertaining eight-man tag team match that saw Enzo Amore, Colin Cassady and American Alpha defeat Blake, Murphy, Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson.
Tye Dillinger earned a rare victory over Alex Riley and Asuka kicked the daylights out of poor Deonna Purrazzo.
I can't say enough about how much good NXT has done with Asuka since she arrived from Japan last year. NXT has established Asuka as a very dangerous woman where every time she's in the ring, someone is probably going to get hurt.
It almost reminds of the vibe I got from Brock Lesnar during his most recent championship reign. Obviously, there are major differences between Lesnar and Asuka, but the element of danger that exists when they enter the building is quite similar — and startling.
Here are the full match results:
- Enzo Amore, Colin Cassady & American Alpha def. Blake, Murphy, Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson
