Craft beer's Roy-Pitz to open brewpub at 990 Spring Garden

The Loft District of Callowhill - aka Spring Arts - getting a new tenant.

Craft-beer specialist Roy-Pitz Brewing Company of Chambersburg, Pa., has signed to open a brewpub at 990 Spring Garden in the Loft District.

Roy-Pitz Barrel House, which  Boxwood Architects is designing in 4,000 square feet, is on track to open in the first quarter of 2017.

Roy-Pitz's Ryan Richards and Jesse Rotz, boyhood friends who later graduated from West Chester University and opened the company in 2008, will also barrel-age sour beers. The outside of the building will be planted with live hops that will grow vertically before harvested for use in brewing.

Roy-Pitz, which refers to its beer as "liquid art" and creates some of the most beautiful labels out there, has a restaurant attached to its brewery in Chambersburg.

Roy-Pitz's commitment further bolsters the emergence of Callowhill's Spring Arts neighborhood, already home to Union Transfer and a soaring residential population.

The neighborhood also awaits the debut of the High Line-style Rail Park  and the 2017 move of Yards Brewing Company to the former Destination Maternity headquarters at Fifth and Spring Garden Streets.
